A group of masked men went on the rampage last night in the town of Ondarroa, Vizcaya, hurling Molotov cocktails at banks and setting fire to rubbish containers. This latest episode of street violence coincided with a judge’s decision to jail six of the eight people detained last week for acts of ‘kale borroka’ (Basque for ‘street fighting’ and refers to urban riots by left-wing youths).
The attacks began at around 23:30 with a Molotov cocktail being thrown at the BBVA bank in calle Kantoipe. The ATM was totally zapped and the entrance to the bank itself was damaged. Next in line were the La Caixa bank, in the same street, and then the Iparkutxa in Plaza Muxika.
When not hurling explosive devices at banks, the group set fire to rubbish containers. The Fire Services managed to prevent any of the fires from spreading and no-one was injured in any of the incidents…
