COVER-UP JOB

There could be good news on the horizon, albeit a distant horizon, for the noses of residents living near the Guadalhorce sewage works. EMASA, who operate the plant, has started the long process of covering the plant to eliminate the foul stench in the area.

The sewage plant was originally in a purely industrial area and, at the time, it was not deemed essential for it to be enclosed. However, over the years, housing projects have gradually moved closer and closer to the area and the stink is no longer acceptable. Parts of the sewage plant have been covered over the years but it has now been decided to cover the lot.

The first stage of proceedings is a ‘draft’ of the specifications for tender of the works to be carried out and if all goes well (come on, be optimistic), the tendering process could begin within about one month. That then gives the Council about four months (more optimism required, dig deep) to come up with a design.

The project is probably going to cost around €20 million and the Local Council will be reliant on external funding (try and keep that optimistic outlook). Once all this is sorted out, the actual work can begin.
