Thousands of Spanish Civil War photos by the legendary photo-journalist Robert Capa have come to light after years of being hidden in Mexico. Capa, who died whilst on assignment in Vietnam in 1954, always believed that the 127 rolls of film had been lost during the German invasion of France. One of Capa’s most famous war pictures is entitled ‘The Falling Soldier’, a shot of the death of a Republican soldier during the Spanish Civil War.
Robert Capa fled Europe for the USA in 1939, leaving the rolls of film in his darkroom, and he always believed they had been lost or destroyed during the subsequent invasion of France by Germany. However, they were actually taken to Mexico by a diplomat, General Francisco Javier Aguilar Gonzalez, where they remained hidden until the 1990’s when his heirs found them amongst the late General’s possessions.
There are around 3,500 negatives and now, after years of wrangling, they are finally in the hands of the Capa estate….
