DELAY IN REMOVING A BODY CAUSES TRAFFIC CHAOS

Following a fatal accident yesterday on the A-7 in which a motorcyclist was killed, it was four hours before Court officials ( Coroner and another official) arrived on the scene to authorise the removal of the body. As a result, there were traffic jams of 12 kilometres.

The accident occurred at 17:00 near the Palacio de los Deportes Martín Carpena in Málaga when a motorcyclist lost control of his machine and was hit by a lorry. The police could only certify the death of the driver as, under Spanish law, it is necessary for members of the judiciary to view the body and authorise its removal, and it was four hours before the officials arrived on the scene.

The traffic jams began to build up, stretching back as far as Arroyo de la Miel in Benalmádena. The police, who could do little more than direct the traffic while they waited for the officials to arrive, re-routed some traffic via the old N-340 coast road, but this, too, soon became clogged and back-up as far as Churriana.

It wasn’t until 22:00 that the body was actually removed.
