A young man was walking through Plaza Masnou in Almería when something caught his eye, a plastic bag left between two large rubbish containers. But it wasn’t the bag itself that captured his attention, it was the little hand poking out of the top of it.
When the tiny hand began to wave, the young man rushed over and found a two day old baby wrapped in a blanket and still with the umbilical clip attached. After calling his mother, the young man then alerted the Emergency Services.
A mobile medical team arrived on the scene to make a preliminary assessment before the baby was transferred by ambulance to hospital in Torrecárdenas. The baby girl will be taken into care by the Junta de Andalucía once she is discharged from hospital. In all cases of abandoned children, the Junta de Andalucía assumes guardianship and places the children in suitable sheltered accommodation.
