The massive surprise inspection carried out the other day by National Police and Labour Inspectors at the site of building works on the Málaga metro has resulted in the detention of four people.
The ‘raid’ by fifty officers from the National Police and Labour Inspectorate lasted over two hours and involved the blocking of all entrances and exits to the metro and local train station. The focus of the inspection was on subcontractors whose workforces are heavily reliant upon immigrant labour as there was a suspicion that some workers were being registered in two places at the same time, most notably in Málaga and Córdoba.
The officers checked the papers of some 200 workers and the vast majority turned out to be in good order. However, there were four cases where the paperwork was definitely not in order and the four individuals have been detained. Three were arrested under the Ley de Extranjeria (Aliens Act) and one has been charged with ‘usurpation of marital status’, in other words using someone else’s identity.
The Unions applauded the inspection, stating that the employment of foreigners should be submitted to the same regulatory framework as that used for Spanish employees in order to safeguard the rights of those employees.
