The annual Nerja Carnival starts today. Starting at 18:00 it is the fancy dress competition for the kids, with the election of the Ninfo and Momo (age group 4 years to 12 years) at 19:30 and the Ninfa del Carnival (age 15 and over) at 21:15. It is then party time with music from the 70’s and 80’s.
At 22:30 in the Cultural Centre, the start of Carnival will be officially announced.
Saturday is procession day, starting at 17:00 (Spanish time) at the Balcón de Europa. I’m not sure I can ever remember one even starting vaguely on time and one year the kick-off was at least a couple of hours later than scheduled. But there’s a first time for everything, as they say, and maybe this is it! At the end of the procession, the adult winners of the fancy dress competition will be announced.
The procession route is: Balcón de Europa, calle Pintada, calle Angustias, Plaza de la Ermita, avenida Castilla Perez, calle Jaén and finishing in the Parque Verano Azul.
Sunday is the traditional Burial of the Sardine, the procession leaving Parque Verano Azul at 17:30 and taking the route: calle Jaén, calle Diputación. calle Granada, calle Animas, calle Pintada and then down to Calahonda beach where we can all say our last goodbyes to the little fishy to the accompaniment of a grand firework display.
