After several years of trying, Nerja finally has two and is the only municipality on the Eastern Costa del Sol with that distinction.
At a ceremony held in the Santiago Bernebeu Stadium in Madrid to coincide with the FITUR tourism fair, the Nerja Councillor for Beaches, Jonathan Méndez, was presented with a ‘Q for Quality’ award relating to Torrecilla beach.
The ‘Q’ status is awarded by the Institute for Quality Spanish Tourism, part of the Ministry of Tourism, and criteria for the award include management of equipment, cleanliness, maintenance, accessibility and car parking facilities . Annual inspections are carried out to make sure the requirements continue to be met. Burriana beach is the other ‘Q’.
In accepting the award, Councillor Méndez pointed out that Torrecilla beach had met the minimum standard required and it was now up to the Council to ensure that improvements continue to be made.
On the Western Costa del Sol, four beaches in Málaga and two in Estepona possess the prestigious award.
