A magistrate in Almería has ordered the detention, in prison, of the mother who abandoned her baby in a plastic bag near rubbish containers on Thursday. She is being charged with attempted murder, as is her sister who was also remanded in custody.
The baby was discovered on Thursday by 20 year old José Maria Salinas as he went for his afternoon coffee. He spotted a plastic bag on the pavement between two rubbish containers, a small hand protruding from the bag. When the hand began to wave, he rushed to investigate and then alerted the Emergency Services.
The baby still had the umbilical clip attached and was wrapped in a hospital (Torrecardénas) blanket and the National Police had little problem checking through the hospital records and locating the mother. The two women, of Moroccan nationality, were arrested on Saturday afternoon and, after the magistrate rejected the mother’s claim that ‘it was the boyfriend’s fault’, they were both remanded in custody.
