The Junta de Andalucía, through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, has made an agreement with the municipality of Vélez-Málaga which could lead to the construction of 2,576 VPO (subsidised or council) houses.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has already submitted a draft collaboration protocol to the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, in which it is proposed that at least two-thirds of the dwellings should be for those whose income is less that 2.5 times the IPREM (Indicador Público de Rentas de Efectos Múltiples).
Each unit would be between 70 and 80 square metres with a price tag of not more than €90,000. The land to build such houses is provided by the local municipality and the Junta de Andalucía, in addition to providing technical assistance, also provides €3,000 per unit to cover the installation of water, electricity etc.
Similar protocols have recently been signed with the municipalities of Antequera, Coín, Mijas, Benelmádena, Estepona and Rincón de la Victoria, the total number of houses involved being 9,512.
The demand for VPO housing has been based on a study carried out by the Andalucían Institute of Social Studies. Presumably it was not such a study that was used in Nerja where 13 VPO houses are to be built and the actual number of applications received for these units is 807.
