ANV AND PCTV ACTIVITIES SUSPENDED FOR THREE YEARS

Judge Baltasar Garzón has suspended the activities of the ANV and PCTV for a period of three years, which means they will not be able to contest the upcoming general election on March 9th 2008.

The ruling by National Court judge Garzón to suspend the activities of the Basque nationalist Party, the ANV, and the Basque communist party, the PCTV, also includes the freezing of bank accounts, restrictions regarding the holding of press conferences and a ban on participation in rallies and demonstrations.

However, the two parties will keep, certainly for the moment, their elected municipal representatives which include 437 councillors, 42 mayors and 9 members of the Basque parliament.
