The fishing fleet may be allowed back out again after the extended ‘biological break’, but that doesn’t mean to say they have been.
The current bad weather has kept the vast majority of the fishing fleet stuck in port, and that means they are losing money. It is reported that the past week of inactivity has cost the fishermen around one million euros and they would like to see a similar deal as applied to farmers in the event of crop loss.
Four boats have been going out from Caleta de Vélez, but that’s about all, the other 1,300 have stayed firmly moored until the inclement weather passes.
The situation also affects the consumer, of course, and it is currently almost impossible to find fresh fish in Málaga city.
