The Ministry of the Environment is set to take urgent action to restore the beaches along the Málaga coast following the recent storms.
A budget of €12 million has been initially allocated for work to be carried out on the nine beaches most damaged by the storms last week. In Málaga city, La Caleta beach has been the worst hit, losing much sand and beach equipment.
In Torrox Costa, both Ferrara and Peñoncillo beaches have suffered quite badly. The lack of any preventative barriers at Ferrara Playa have meant that the waters reached the sea wall by the promenade with sunloungers and parasols having to be removed in a hurry.
Chilches, Lagos and Mezquitilla beaches have, as usual, been badly affected. Fontanilla and Casablanca beaches in Marbella, both of which had already suffered damage in the Christmas storms, now need a lot of attention. In Fuengirola, Santa Ana beach has all but disappeared.
The regeneration work, much of it shifting sand around, will begin as soon as the stormy weather abates, the intention being to get all these beaches into good condition for the easter holiday period.
