The Junta de Andalucía has awarded the status of ‘Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía’ (Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalucía) to the annual ‘Concurso Tradicional de Verdiales’ in Benagalbón.
The festival has been held in Benagalbón each September since 1993 and attracts a great number of visitors each year. There are normally between 11 and 13 groups of musicians and dancers performing all over the town during the festivities and the event also attracts groups from other areas, such as Murcia and Albacete.
The ‘Tourist Interest’ status, which was only applied for in 2004, not only means the receipt of preferential subsidies, but also ensures increased promotion of the event, both nationally and internationally, by the Junta de Andalucía. It also then becomes included in the ‘Tour España’ guide.
