The Spanish government has formally put the country on ‘maximum terror alert’ as campaigning for the March 9th General Election gets underway tomorrow.
The alert provides for the mobilisation of all state security forces in order to protect party headquarters, election meetings, sports stadiums, shopping centres and public transport systems. The Government is mindful of the fact that the Madrid commuter train bombings of March 11th 2004, in which 191 people died, were perpetrated just three days before a national election.
