Bolton Wanderers pulled off a bit of a surprise by putting out Atlético Madrid to reach the last sixteen of the UEFA Cup.
Bolton, with a 1-0 advantage from the home leg, played out a 0-0 draw at the Vicente Calderón stadium in Madrid to dispose of Atlético Madrid, currently fourth in La Liga and the obvious favourites despite being a goal down from the first leg.
There were very few goal scoring chances created, Atlético only in fact managing one. The absence of their star striker, Argentine Sergio Aguero, who was out through suspension, rather blunted the Atlético attack. The best chance came early in the match when Bolton’s Stelios thundered in a shot only to see it tipped over the bar by the Atlético keeper, Abbiati.
The Trotters now go on to play Sporting Lisbon in the last sixteen of the competition.
