Around 3,000 people attended an elaborate Hindu wedding in Ghanteswara, India, last week…..between two monkeys!
Jhumuri, the bride, wore a five metre long red sari and was adorned with sandalwood paste, as is the Hindu custom at weddings. The groom, a three year old male called Manu, arrived at the temple for the ceremony with a huge procession and accompanied by loud music and fireworks.
The Hindu priest performed the wedding ceremony as if it were for humans and afterwards, the guests feasted on rice, lentils, vegetables, sweets and fish. What, no bananas? The ‘happy couple’ were showered with gifts including a gold necklace.
Prior to the wedding, the two monkeys had been kept in chains but after the ceremony they were given their freedom. Both had been sort of family pets, having been rescue cases in the past.
