The turnout was roughly the same as in the last general election in 2004 at 75% and the end result was just about the same, the socialist PSOE of Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero winning the day.
The PSOE, with 169 seats, have an overall but not an absolute majority, which means that pacts with some of the smaller parties will once again have to be made. Both the major parties, the PSOE and the PP, increased their representation in Congress at the expense of the smaller parties.

In the regional elections in Andalucía, the PSOE under Manuel Chaves maintained their absolute majority although the PP made up significant ground on their major rivals.
