The Municipal Council in Vélez-Málaga is to start implementing a new system of underground rubbish containers throughout the municipality, with a total of 62 containers being installed at a cost of €1,054,000.
Almost 48% of the investment will be in the flagship tourist resort of Torre del Mar with 28 of these containers being installed. The idea is to remove unsightly bins which clutter the streets and often impede traffic (image), reduce unpleasant odours and increase the capacity for the disposal of solid waste. It is also hoped that a side effect will be a reduction in the amount of vandalism in the area.
The town of Vélez-Málaga itself will get 17 containers and the rest will be divided between the smaller townships in the municipality. The first containers are due to be installed in Plaza San Julian and are even equipped with a system that sends out an SMS message when they are full!…..The ones recently installed in Plaza Tutti Frutti in Nerja should have been programmed to send out an SMS saying ‘Please remember to take the wrappers off’. They are still not available for use.
