Empty grenade disrupts lunch on Málaga beach

A bit of a scare yesterday on El Dedo beach when a worker (environmental engineer?) from the Limasa cleaning company discovered a grenade in the rubbish near Chiringuito El Tintero.

Around 30 diners were about to have lunch when the discovery was made and had to be evacuated from the building as a precautionary measure. Police cordoned off the area and TEDAX bomb disposal experts moved to the scene.

The grenade, which had the marking ‘ETA’ on it, turned out to be devoid of explosive charge and harmless. A search of the area revealed several other objects, including military boots, a book about ETA and manuals relating to the security services.

It is thought that the grenade and the other items were picked up by one of the Limasa cleaning machines somewhere between arroyo Jaboneros and El Candado and probably belonged to a collector or member of the security forces who threw them out when having a clean-out or moving house.

At 15:00, the security perimeter was lifted and the diners were permitted to move back into Chiringuito El Tintero to resume their lunch.
