Three people died and another seven were injured in a gas explosion at an apartment block in La Verneda, Barcelona.
The explosion occurred at 07:30 this morning in an apartment in the Rambla de la Prim block in La Verneda. Residents from the upper floors were evacuated as a thick column of smoke filled the air. A total of 38 people required assistance and treatment at the scene, mostly for smoke inhalation.
One of the seven injured is a woman who suffered second degree burns to her hands and she is now in the Burns Unit of the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. Her injuries are classified as ‘serious’.
It is not yet known whether the explosion was caused by butane or natural gas, both being available and used within the building.
