The rains came a little earlier than forecast yesterday, causing either the cancellation or curtailing of some of the processions in the province.
The Semana Santa procession in Nerja went ahead as planned but, when the rain started at around 23:00, it made a beeline for the El Salvador church so as not to damage the thrones. Yesterday’s procession was organised by the relatively new cofradia (brotherhood) Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo y la Virgen de los Desamparados.
The rush to the church for shelter was not straightforward, however, as the organisers of the procession had forgotten or neglected to arrange an ‘alternate route’ with the police, fire brigade and civil defence in case the weather, or anything else, intervened and a speedy retreat was required. Understandable, in many ways, as it hadn’t rained on this day for eleven years.
