The Association of Market Traders in Nerja (AVAM) is now considering whether to extend its protest against the proposed moving of the weekly Tuesday market after staging a strike and a protest march yesterday. Further strikes have not been ruled out.
The protesters see the move as the potential ruination of their businesses, considering the new site in Almijara to be ‘the end of the world’. The Council, for its part, is equally determined that the move will go ahead after years of delays. The final touches are being made to the new site and it could all happen within the next four to six weeks. Or not.
Yesterday’s protest march through the town was attended by around 200 people according to the organisers and by around 150 according to the Local Police….. Watching the video (down the page) and having been there, I would say that both official counters must belong to the same fishing club! Around 70 would be our estimate.
Meanwhile, as the protesters protested in the centre, the police policed in the market area and ticketed 18 vans belonging to the market traders! The Association may also get landed with a hefty €3,000 fine for holding a protest march without permission!
