Local Police in Rincón de la Victoria located a set of cages near the Peñas Blancas warehouses where a number of birds were being kept in such unhygienic conditions that they constituted a public health risk. There were 16 English hens and 7 roosters, some of them being fighting birds.
There have been several reports of thefts of similar birds in the area in recent weeks and the police are keen to trace the owner who was not on the site at the time of the discovery. In the meantime, the birds have been removed and the Municipal Environment Department is to dismantle the facility and clean up the site.
According to veterinary reports, the birds were actually in good condition given the unhygienic state of their cages. One bird showed all the signs of having been in a fight but was not in need of attention. The animals have been valued at between €100 and €300 each.
