The statisticians have been busy once more to produce a report about how long people take to get to work each day. In Málaga, the average time spent getting to or from work is half an hour with 38.5% taking 15-29 minutes and 4.5% taking an hour or more. On a national scale, this puts Málaga in the worst eight provinces, Madrid being top with an average of 35 minutes. Top position goes to Soria and Teruel with a mere 13 minute average.
By gender, women in Málaga spend less time getting to and from work than men with the slowest being males under the age of 29 years and the fastest being women over the age of 50 years.
The study shows that 533,200 trips to the workplace were made on a daily basis with 76% being within the same municipality. Wednesdays were the busiest days and Sundays (naturally, one would imagine) the least busy.
The car is the preferred mode of transport in 69% of journeys, with only 24% going on foot or by bicycle and a mere 1% using public transport.
Strangely, the study was made in 2006 but it has taken until now for it to see the light of day. A personal analysis reveals that it would take about 10 minutes to get to work by car in winter (taking into account finding a parking space in Nerja and one way streets) and about 20 minutes in the summer, around 8 minutes by bicycle and roughly an hour by public transport. Walking, on the other hand, would take a mere 15 seconds as it’s only next door…
