The Nerja market traders are certainly not giving up their cause without a fight. Opposed to the move from the current El Chaparil site to the new location at ‘the end of the world’ (Almijara II), the traders are now asking the Provincial Fire Consortium to carry out a safety inspection of the new site.
The president of the Association of Street Vendors of Málaga (AVAM), Juan Rojas, has requested a meeting with the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, to discuss the situation further. It seems that AVAM now accept the inevitability of a move from the current location but would like to pursue alternative destinations, such as the calle Carabeo area.
The AVAM president is also expecting to hold talks with government representatives Hilary Lopez Luna and the Defensor del Pueblo Andaluz (Ombudsman), José Chamizo. The Ombudsman has already offered to mediate in the dispute between the market traders and the Nerja Council.
