That perennial chestnut, the proposed Nerja Water Treatment Plant, is back on the agenda. The Councillor for Infrastructure, José Alberto Tomé, is proposing to put forward a motion (and there’s plenty of those to choose from off Burriana!) at the next plenary session on Monday April 14th calling for the Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza (CMA) – an agency under the Ministry of Environment- to expedite the processing of the Environmental Impact Study necessary before any work can begin.
The Council have, apparently, requested several meetings in order to find out exactly what is going on with the report but, so far, to no avail. It is not known whether the report is in the draft stage or even if it has actually been commissioned yet.
The site for the new plant, next to the urbanisation Fuente del Baden, has already been made available by the Nerja Council.
Another thorny issue is the financing of the €36 million project. An initial funding agreement signed with ACUSUR has since been rejected by the Council who believe that the project should be financed in full by the Ministry of Environment and the Junta de Andalucía. Since the rejection of that initial agreement, the Council has heard nothing further concerning finance and has no idea whether any funding is actually available or, if it is available, where it is coming from.
In a nutshell, it would seem that things have moved up a gear, but only to the speed of a comatose sloth.
