An ETA attack aimed at Guardia Civil officers has been unsuccessful after one of the devices failed to explode.
Two bombs were placed in telephone installations in the town of Lapoblación, about 90 kilometres from Pamplona in the Navarra region. The plan was for bomb number one to explode in order to get the Guardia Civil to investigate. A second bomb, set at head height and containing shrapnel, would then go off and cause serious injury, or worse.
However, bomb number one failed to explode and it was bomb number two which became the subject of the investigation. A lucky escape.
