Almost the entire population of Canillas de Aceituno attended the funeral yesterday of Manuel Marín.
An estimated 3,500 people packed the square around the church in Canillas de Aceituno yesterday for the funeral service of Manuel Marín, the 15 year old boy whose body was found in the mountains on Saturday.
The funeral took place at midday at the iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario with the Bishop of Málaga, Antonio Dorado Soto, officiating the Mass along with three other priests. Those in attendance included many political figures from throughout the Axarquia, amongst them the mayors of Iznate, Riogordo, Cómpeta, Alfarnate, Alcaucín, Arenas Canillas de Albaida, Macharaviaya and Periana.
In Periana, the start of the Dia de Aceite Verdial was delayed as a minute’s silence was observed and in Canillas, all bars and restaurants remained closed for the morning as the town entered its second day of official mourning.
Manuel Marín disappeared on March 31st and his body was eventually found on Saturday in the mountains close to the town. It took rescue workers four hours to retrieve the body due to the nature of the terrain in the area which is rocky and steep.
