The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has launched a new anti-speeding campaign.
Between now and April 27th, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is doubling the number of radar speed traps on Spanish roads in a campaign designed to reduce the number of accidents. It is thought that excessive speed is a major factor in one out of every four accidents.
In Málaga province, an average of 3,000 cars per day will be clocked, particularly on secondary roads.
The campaign also involves education and advice through media campaigns, not only highlighting the dangers of speeding but also pointing out such things as the effect of increased speeds on fuel consumption. A 20% increase in speed results in a 44% increase in fuel consumption.
Two similar campaigns were carried out in Málaga province last year, from March 13th to March 26th and from August 6th to August 19th, and the number of drivers booked for speeding were 3.2% and 4.7% respectively.
Drivers now not only face the deduction of between two and six points from their license if caught for speeding, but could also face jail terms under the new Penal Code.
