According to an environmental group, sewage is spilling into the Rio Chillar in Nerja.
The environmental group Gabinete de Estudios de la Naturaleza de la Axarquía, GENA-Ecologistas en Acción has denounced two instances of residual waters (polite name for raw sewage) spilling into the lower reaches of the Rio Chillar in Nerja.
The group say that the discharges, close to hotels and houses, are illegal and uncontrolled and pose a health hazard, especially in a tourist resort with no comprehensive sanitation system. One of the discharges is from a pipe thought to have been damaged by the September 21st 2007 floods and the sewage from this one has been building up in sludgy puddles.
The Councillor for the Environment, José Miguel Jimena, is reported as stating that the Council is unaware of the existence of such discharges but will act immediately to confirm and eliminate them.
