The Nerja Council is planning to approve a new city ordinance at its next plenary session on April 25th which gives the Council regulatory control over the weekly market.
Until now, activities carried out at the weekly Tuesday market have been governed under the overall trade policy of the Junta de Andalucía.
In addition, a motion is also being put forward to allow the mayor to order the moving of the market ‘by decree’. The move is said to be happening ‘shortly’ as the work being carried out on the new site in Almijara is now complete.
There is still much opposition to the move and today, the Market Traders Association (AVAM) will be once again busy collecting signatures for their petition. In the meantime, the mayor is expected to meet with the head of AVAM, Juan Rojas, to discuss various aspects of the move which, according to the mayor, is ‘irreversible’.
The Nerja Council has already promised to lay on a special bus service to the new site.
