The Health Department is advising people not to consume Girasol (Sunflower oil) for the time being.
Girasol originating in the Ukraine and widely distributed throughout Europe has been found to be contaminated with mineral oils. Although the actual health risk is said to be ‘minimal’ due to the low-level of contamination, the Health Department is nevertheless advising people not to consume the oil until further tests have been carried out.
As soon as the tests have been completed, a list of the brands containing the contaminants will be made available to the public. The vast majority of potentially contaminated brands, based on the origin of the product, have already been taken out of the food chain or are in the process of being withdrawn.
