Nerja market saga continues

The Ombudsman has written to both the Nerja Municipal Council and the Association of Market Traders (AVAM) offering to mediate in the dispute over the relocation of the weekly market.

The president of AVAM, Juan Rojas, has aid that he will continue pressing for an alternative location for the market, such as the calle Carabeo area, as the proposed new site in Almijara is not acceptable. He added that AVAM is not opposed to change but does not agree with the current proposal.

The Council, adamant that the move will go ahead, has stated on many occasions that moving the market to the Carabeo area was not feasible and the Ombudsman is now asking the Council to issue a report explaining exactly why such a move is not possible.

AVAM are not ruling out taking the matter to court if they are forced to relocate to the ‘end of the world’. They are holding their next meeting on May 8th to discuss the matter further.

In the meantime, it looks like it will be at least another month before any move could take place as this is the time period allocated for replies to be made to the Ombudsman.
