Ecologists are complaining about the latest ‘floating bomb’ to arrive in Gibraltar, the ‘USS Florida’, a nuclear submarine carrying MK-48 torpedoes and 154 Tomahawk missiles.
The ecologists are urging all the various administrations, from national to municipal, to pursue their original objective which was for Gibraltar to be ‘nuclear free’. The past couple of years have seen an increase in the number of nuclear vessels putting into Gibraltar, mostly for repairs.
Four nuclear submarines visited Gibraltar last year, ‘HMS Turbulent’, ‘HMS Sceptere’, USS San Juan’ and the ‘USS Augusta’ on two occasions.
