The Provincial Court has overturned a ruling by the Criminal Court Number 4 in which the former mayor of Rincón de la Victoria had been acquitted.
The former mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, José María Gómez Muñoz, had made statements suggesting that two police officers had threatened to find a ‘suspicious package’ in his car. An investigation into the matter found that, basically, the accusations had all been a pack of lies and a lawsuit for defamation and slander was brought by the UPLB, the Union of Police Officers and Firemen.
However, even though the former mayor acknowledged that the statements had been untrue, he was acquitted. The UPLB launched an appeal and now, the Provincial Court has overturned the original verdict and ordered José María Gómez Muñoz to pay €5,000 in compensation and €1,000 court costs. No further appeal is now possible in the case.
In addition, the Court has also ordered that the judgement be read out at the next plenary session of the Rincón de la Victoria Council.
