The Ecobus has been in Nerja as part of a recycling awareness campaign aimed at schoolchildren.
The bus is traveling throughout the province to promote the ‘three R’s’, recycle, reduce and reuse. In Nerja, the amount of waste collected for recycling has doubled since the system began in 2003. In 2007, the waste collected for recycling was:
- Packaging – 54 tons
- Paper & cardboard – 150 tons
- Glass – 150 tons
There are currently 64 of the yellow containers (packaging) in Nerja and the figure is expected to reach the 100 mark by the end of the year. There are 29 blue containers (paper and cardboard), with another 11 being planned, and 30 green containers (glass) with a further 20 to be introduced shortly.
There is, as one might expect, an upsurge in the levels of waste collected for recycling following the periodic visits by the Ecobus.
