The Colectivo de Buceadores Recreativos de Nerja (CBRN) has once again warned that the marine plant ‘Poseidonia’, vital for the ecological system around Maro-Cerro Gordo, is disappearing at an alarming rate.
The CBRN, headed by Bernabé Toledo, says that the Poseidonia, a marine plant vital to the Mediterranean ecological system, is disappearing rapidly due to uncontrolled trawling in the area and also as a result of the floods last September.
Toledo recalls that eight years ago, the plant was everywhere from Burriana beach to Maro but now just covers and area of forty square metres. He proposes a restocking of the area as, in his opinion, the situation has now become critical.
In December last year, the CBRN put in a request for its members to carry out a clean-up operation of the seabed in the area but permission was refused by the Department of the Environment. Now, with the backing of the Nerja Council, the CBRN has planned two days of cleaning, one in June and another in September.
