Murder prompts Torrox to request more police

A murder in Torrox Costa has finally prompted the local authority to request an increase in the number of police officers for the area.

The body of 34 year old M.S.R., a cook and resident of Torrox Costa, was found earlier this week in a residential area of the town. He had suffered a severe blow to the head.

On Tuesday, a 30 year old Moroccan was detained as the alleged perpetrator of the crime and at his court appearance some 300 local residents turned up to vent their anger and hurl abuse at the detainee. The police are also looking for a second individual, also of Moroccan nationality, in connection with the killing.

In the wake of the killing, the mayor of Torrox, Toñi Claros, has put in a request to the Central Government for an increase in the number of Guardia Civil officers assigned to the town. The current contingent numbers 28 officers.

The Council also plans to increase the number of Local Police officers, aiming for a total of 40 by 2011. There are currently three officers completing their training and three more have been recruited, all of whom could be active by the end of this year.
