Work-related accidents yesterday claimed the lives of seven people in Spain with four killed in an accident at the new Valencia CF stadium.
A black day for industrial accidents yesterday as seven people lost their lives. In Valencia, work was being carried out on the new stadium when a section of the concrete framework came crashing down. There were three workmen on that part of the framework at the time and a fourth man was underneath it.
Two of the workmen were found alive in the rubble but later died from their injuries. The dead men have been named as:
- Enrique Pradas Franco, a 24 year old Spaniard who worked as a welder.
- Nelson Rocha Garcia, a 44 year old Bolivian labourer, married with two children.
- Luis Medardo Sinchiguano, a 38 year old Ecuadorian labourer, married with two children.
- José Vilanova Rosa, a 24 year old Spaniard who was a First Officer on the site.
An investigation is being carried out, although it is known that all safety procedures were in place and being followed.
A 42 year old miner died in Santa Lucía de Gordón after being caught in an avalanche of mud and water. Two miners were caught and wept away by the avalanche, which occurred yesterday morning, but one was rescued by colleagues. The man who died was named as Benigno Álvarez, married with two children and due to retire very shortly.
In Taboada, Lucena, one man died and two others were injured when their van crashed into a tree. The man who died in the accident was a Portuguese national.
Yesterday afternoon, in the Segovian town of El Espinar, a 56 year old painter died from his injuries after falling from a ladder.
