Spanish fishermen are protesting about the price of diesel and in Madrid they are giving away 20 tons of fish as part of their action.
The Confederation of Spanish Fisheries, CEPESCA, are protesting and lobbying the government about the constant increases in the price of diesel oil which is affecting their livelihoods quite drastically. As part of the protest, the fishermen are giving away twenty tons of fish free, gratis and for nothing.
CEPESCA argue that the price of diesel fuel oil has quadrupled in the past five years from €0.18 to the current €0.75, yet the price they get for the fish at first sale is the same as it was twenty years ago. This is one of the main factors behind what the organisation regard as a serious crisis in the Spanish fishing industry.
The doom and gloom goes so far as to suggest that not only will many businesses go under, but fish could disappear from the diet of Spaniards if nothing is done to help the industry. There are already many Spanish fishermen unemployed or under threat of being laid off, including some in Andalucía.
