At its plenary session, the Nerja Council voted in favour of a new ordinance relating to the regulation of street vendors.
The ruling Partido Popular used its absolute majority to approve a new ordinance regulating street vendors, which includes both the regular Tuesday market and the Sunday flea market. This means that the mayor only has to sign the decree ordering the market to move from its current El Chaparil location to the new site in Almijara, known as ‘the end of the world’.
The opposition PSOE party abstained from the vote on the grounds that they had not seen various official reports relating to the new site and therefore could not say whether it was suitable or not. The IU voted against the motion, proposing alternative sites such as El Playazo, Parque Verano Azul and Burriana beach.
However, the market traders are still opposed to the move and will be holding a meeting next Thursday to decide upon what action they will take. They are not ruling out denouncing the local Council and taking legal action.
A spokesman for the Council pointed out that it was the market traders themselves who asked for the intervention of the Ombudsman for Andalucía and, as a result, should abide by his decision.
So the move is now even more ‘very soon’. Or at least the decision to move is ‘very soon’, whether the actual move will take place then is an entirely different matter.
