Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has won the Giro d’Italia. He is the first non-Italian winner since 1996 and only the second Spaniard to win this prestigious event.
Alberto Contador became only the second Spaniard ever to win the Giro d’Italia, the other one being the legendary Miguel Indurain. There were 21 stages over a three week period and Contador took the title despite not actually winning a single one of them, consistency being the key to victory.
Contador’s team, Astana, were only invited to join the race one week prior to the event.
