Protección Civil to monitor Nerja beaches

In a change to the ‘norm’, security and safety on Nerja’s beaches will this year be in the hands of volunteers from the Protección Civil (Civil Defence).

A total of 23 members of the Protección Civil will be on duty from 10:30 until 20:00 each day during the bathing season (June 15th to September 15th), manning the lifeguard towers, maintaining security and assisting the general public. They will have, at their disposal, a jet ski and a boat.

In recent years, the task of monitoring the beaches has been carried out by individuals contracted by the Council.

The opposition PSOE has expressed ‘doubts’ concerning the legality of changing the beach management system. They are suspicious that the change could be hiding irregularities relating to employment.
