Perennial underachievers, but always amongst the favourites, Spain got off to a good start in their first Euro 2008 match beating Russia 4-1.
David Villa was the hero of the day, scoring a hat-trick with Cesc Fabregas getting the fourth. Russia started well enough but were hit on the counter attack, Torres passing the ball to Villa who calmly slotted the ball home.
Both sides had plenty of chances in what was quite an open game, but it was Spain who made the most of theirs and ended up 4-1 winners in a wet Innsbruck. Roman Pavlyuchenko scored the consolation goal for the Russians.
