Eight police officers and four fishermen were injured yesterday following clashes outside the Andalucían Parliament building.
Fishermen from most of the ports in the Gulf of Cádiz had gone to the parliament building to press their claims for economic assistance due to the soaring cost of fuel oil.
After a successful meeting with parliamentary officials, in which all sides of the dispute agreed to ‘push in the same direction’ at the next Council of Ministers meeting in Brussels on June 23rd, things turned a bit nasty and eight police officers and four fishermen were injured. One of the injured is in a serious condition after being hit in the face by a firecracker.
Five people were detained as a result of the troubles. The fishermen blamed the authorities for the violence, saying that they were on their way back to the buses to return home when the police decided to mount a charge.
The fishermen have been on strike for the past couple of weeks and their actions include preventing outside supplies of fish from reaching the Spanish mainland.
