Chiringuitos in Málaga are suffering quite badly as a result of the various strikes and some are even contemplating closing.
The strike by fishermen has resulted in a scarcity of fresh fish in the province and stocks of frozen fish are running low. Add in the strike by lorry drivers and the situation gets even worse.
The few fresh sardines which are getting onto the market are selling for €42 per kilo compared to the normal €20. Some Chiringuito owners are contemplating closing, despite it being the start of the busy summer season, as they say they are unable to provide what the customers want. The worst hit are the small business who do not have the capacity to store frozen goods.
The Association of Beach Entrepreneurs, however, is urging its members to stay open, use big fish instead of the usual small fry, go for paella and generally be a bit imaginative with their menus.
