After four years of paperwork and constant announcements of ‘very soon’, the weekly market in Nerja will move to its new location in Almijara on June 24th.
The market traders still oppose the move to the site they call ‘the end of the world’, fearing the death of the market, and are not ruling out strike action. They complain that there has been no negotiation, everything being carried out by imposition.
The Council, which has steadfastly refused to consider alternative sites, has warned market traders who do not turn up at the new site on June 24th risk losing their licences, a possiblity under the new municipal ordinances relating to street vendors.
The allocation of the places at the new market took place yesterday, although none of the 200 market traders were actually present at the event.
