A Repsol tanker caused the evacuation of four hotels, four residential buildings, numerous shops and the Town Hall in Benidorm yesterday morning.
The tanker was on the camino El Puente and as it passed under the bridge, which incidentally has a height limitation notice, it damaged the valve on its tank causing an escape of propane gas. An initial security perimeter of 600 metres was established but was subsequently expanded as police and firefighters tried to contain the spill.
People who were not evacuated from their homes were told to stay clear of windows and balconies in order to avoid any potential, and dangerous fumes. The tanker was carrying 20,000 litres of propane gas.
