The EU has announced emergency measures to help the fishing industry, which is suffering as a result of high diesel costs.
Seven countries, including Spain, had been requesting assistance for the fishing industry and new measures were approved yesterday during an EU meeting in Venice.
The new measures allow more flexibility in relation to the European Fisheries Fund. State aid to companies can now rise to €100,000 (from €30,000) without the need to consult or provide justification to the European Union. The granting of such state aid also becomes a little more flexible.
